The quick answer

If the fishing minigame is difficult, Willy’s shop sells a Training Rod for 25g. At low fishing levels it provides a level-5-sized green catch bar, but it catches only basic fish and cannot use bait or tackle. During a catch, keep the fish icon inside the green bar until the progress meter fills.[1][2]

Cast, hook and control the green bar

  1. Cast the line

At water, hold Use Tool to charge the cast and release it. Use the action for your current control binding rather than assuming a mouse or controller layout.[2]

  2. React to the bite

When the bite indicator and sound appear, press Use Tool to start the minigame.[2]

  3. Make controlled corrections

Pressing raises the green bar; releasing lets it fall. Short presses can make smaller adjustments than a long hold. Keep the fish inside the bar until progress fills; empty progress loses the catch.[2]

Practice the timing before buying more equipment. The rod affects what you can catch and equip, while the minigame still requires control. Fish availability also depends on the place, season and other conditions.[2]

Know what the Training Rod gives up

  • Buy it for 25g from Willy’s Fish Shop.[1]
  • Its easier bar is useful below Fishing level 5; it does not grant five actual skill levels.[1]
  • It catches fish with difficulty below 50, and those catches are normal quality.[1]
  • Bait and tackle do not attach to this rod.[1]

Use it as a low-cost practice option. It cannot replace every fishing tool or catch every target, so switch when the fish you need is outside its limits.

The first bait-capable upgrade

The Fiberglass Rod costs 1,800g at Willy’s shop and unlocks at Fishing level 2. It accepts bait but not tackle. Buying it is a change in equipment capabilities, not a guarantee that every fish becomes easy.[3]

If an item will not attach, first check the rod type. A Training Rod is incompatible; the Fiberglass Rod accepts bait, while tackle requires a different rod.[1][3]
