The quick answer

Minecraft ships as two editions. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is the version with historical mod support. Bedrock Edition runs on Windows 10/11, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and mobile, and supports cross-play and cross-device realms between those platforms.[1]

Buying on PC through minecraft.net bundles both editions, so desktop players do not have to choose before installing.[1]

Which edition should you pick?

On Windows, macOS or Linux you can install either edition, and buying through minecraft.net bundles both on PC. Console and mobile players are on Bedrock automatically, so the choice only really exists on desktop.[1]

If you plan to play with friends on phones or consoles, pick Bedrock: its cross-play lets everyone join the same worlds and Realms. If you want historical mods and community servers, pick Java.[1]

Feature differences at a glance

Java Edition is the original version with open modding and long-established community servers. Bedrock Edition adds the Minecraft Marketplace, cross-device Realms and the 'Better Together' cross-play umbrella, and is the version that receives the widest device support.[1]
