The quick answer

In 2026 Mojang moved Minecraft to year-based version numbers: releases now start with the year, such as 26.1, for both Java and Bedrock editions. The change was announced in an official article explaining the numbering system.[3]

Announced 26.x updates include the 26.1 drop with an ice cave biome and new frozen zombie mob, with further game drops tracked on the official updates timeline.[2][4]

What changed

Before 2026, Minecraft versions used the classic 1.x line that had grown since 2011. Under the new scheme each year starts a new number: the first 2026 release is 26.1, followed by further game drops such as Bedrock 26.70 through the year.[3]

The old 1.x numbers are not reused; update notes and the official timeline list every drop under its new year-based label.[2]

What is coming in the 26.x drops

Announced 26.x content includes an ice cave biome and a new frozen zombie mob, presented at Minecraft Live as part of the next major update. Later drops continue on the same year-based labels, and preview builds track them on the official timeline and community wikis.[2][4]
