The quick answer

Competitive Skill Groups are assigned per map, CS Rating belongs to Premier, and Profile Rank increases through match XP. They describe different systems and should not be compared as one score.[1]

Understand the distinction

For a Competitive map without a Skill Group, the client displays the wins still required. Valve also explains that inactivity can hide an old Skill Group; a Competitive win is then used to reassess it.[1]

Suggested checklist

  1. Write down whether you are looking at Competitive, Premier or the profile screen.[1]
  2. Use the requirement displayed on the chosen map rather than an old universal placement count.[1]
  3. If a previous group disappeared after a break, follow the client’s reassessment requirement.[1]

Limits and next steps

Valve calculates groups automatically. A source check cannot predict how many rating points your next result will earn.[1]
