Game Science was founded in 2014 by developers from Tencent's Asura (斗战神) team and spent years in mobile games before betting on a single-player Unreal Engine action RPG. Black Myth: Wukong launched on August 20, 2024 and industry reporting put it past twenty million copies sold within its first month, making it one of the fastest-selling action games ever.[4]
Zhong Kui rides that foundation: same studio, same single-player action RPG direction, a new mythological protagonist. The reveal-to-launch pattern Wukong followed — annual anniversary videos building to long gameplay demos — is already repeating.[3][4]

Studio background
The Shenzhen- and Hangzhou-based studio is led by Feng Ji, creative lead on Asura. Wukong's success turned Game Science into China's highest-profile single-player developer, and the studio has said it intends to keep building games under the Black Myth umbrella.[4]
What the pattern suggests
Expect long marketing cycles with anniversary videos, no early release-date commitment, and a content-rich final demo close to launch — exactly the cadence Wukong used. Platforms for Zhong Kui remain unannounced.[3]
